Basic Introduction

Q/R:
Quote and Rhetorical Question
(A Rhetorical Question is a question you don't want answered.)
(A Quote from text or should link to your story)

TAKO:
T - the merchant of Venice
A - William shakespeare
K - key a key moment that shocked the reader was when Antonio agreed to pay a pound of flesh to shylock if he didnt replay the bond
O -he was willing to die for money to give Bassanio..... Shylock and Antonio hate each other..... Shylock doesn't show mercy
Second line will have T and A together
T - Title  e.g 'The Merchant Of Venice'
A - Author e.g 'William Shakespeare'
K - Key Argument, Use words from the question, so what are you arguing?
O - Outline, The three things you are going to write about. (Your Red White Blue Statement)

"if you wrong us, shall we rat revenge?.." shakespeare- Shylock a-l-
have yu ever felt like taking revenge? in William Shakespeare's 'the merchant of Venice' a key moment that shocked the reader was when Antonio agreed to forfeit a pound of flesh to Shylock if he didn't repay his bond. this moment was shocking outrageous and fascinating. this moment was important to the text as a whole because Shylock and Antonio didn't like each other but still agreed on the bond, antonio was willing to risk his life for Bassanio, and Shylock did not show mercy in claiming his his bond.

basic body paragraph x3
Point- The moment when Antonio agreed to the bond was shocking because Shylock and Antonio didn't get along.

Evidence- Antonio was a merchant and Shylock made a living leaning people money with interest. while shylock charged interst, antonio lent money with out interest and scorred shylock for doing so. he also spat at shylock and called him "cut throat dog".

Explain-therefore the ready is shocked to discover Antonio ans Shylock can come to an agreement about money lending. it is also shocking because when Shylock calls Antonio out for the way he treats him, Antonio tells Shylock that he will spit on him and call him a dog again. this treatment is not usual between people who make agreements.
(how the evidence proves the point)

Links- with treat meant like this from Antonio towards Shylock, and a promise to be just as crawl in the future, it is shocking that they both agreed to the bond.
(link back to my key argument)

paragraph 2
Point-another reason this is shocking is because Antonio is willing to die for bassanio.
Evidence- He loves Bassanio he does not want bassanio to feel guilt because he might have coursed antonios death.
Antonio cant pay the money to Shylock because his ship sunk, Bassanio cant pay the money because hes poor there for Antonio had to give Shylock a pound of his flesh

Shylock Character Study #3

Shylock Character Study #3

Many characters hold anti semitic views, but in places
Shakespeare lets Shylock speak from the heart and suddenly
we see him as a human, not a stereotype.

  • when Shylock offers to lend money without interest some argue that he is being kind, do you agree? I think that nice becuase he would give the money to another person

  • In A3S1 Shylock suffers great losses. Look for suggestions of his sorrow, loneliness and feelings for his dead wife. when shylock says "why, there, there, there, there! A diamond gone cost me two thousand ducats in Frankfurt- the curse never fell upon our nation till now! I never felt it till now- two thousand ducats in that, and the other precious, precious jewels. I would my daughter were dead at my foot and the jewels in her ear! would she were hearses at my foot the ducats in her coffin! No news of them? Why, so. and I know not whats spent in the search. Why thou, loss upon loss! The thief gone with so much, and so much to find the thief- and no satisfaction, no revenge. no nor ill luck stirring but what lights o' my breathing, no tears but o' my shedding."

  • In A4S1 when Shylock is sentenced, we again feel pity for him. Why is this an achievement for Shakespeare (consider his audience) I feel like he wants us to feel like we are there in the story to.

  • The Merchant of Venice is considered a comedy,
however the character of Shylock makes it feel more of a tragi-comedy.
Do you feel he is portrayed more as a villain or victim. Write a paragraph
explaining your thoughts with supporting evidence from the play.

I think shylock is more a victim then a villain. Shylock made a bond and Antonio said yes to it

  • It has been argued that the play should be renamed ‘The Jew of Venice’. Why do you think this is? Would it change your initial view of the play? Would it be a more suitable name?  The story is based off a Jew who wants to cut a pound
of flesh out of Antonio so yes i think 'the jew of venice'
is a better name for this play.

  • Was Bassanio right to give away the ring, give reasons for your thinking. It was not right for Bassanio to give away the ring, portia and bassanio made an oath.

Shylock Character Study #2

Shylock Character Study #2

  • How does he behave when he thinks he is winning? Shylock acts very childish and immature.

  • Why do lines 40-46 offer a particularly chilling comparison. What is Shylock saying. Shylock says "You'll ask me why I rather choose to have A weight of carrion flesh than to receive
"You're going to ask me why I'd rather have a pound of decaying flesh than three thousand ducats. I won't answer that. Let's just say it's because I feel like it. Is that enough of an answer? What if I had a rat in my house, and I felt like paying ten thousand ducats to have it exterminated? Do you have your answer yet?"

  • How does Shylock react when he becomes the victim? He becomes very helpless with what is happening.

Act Four, Scene One- Line Study

Act Four, Scene One- Line Study

  • Antonio gives us three short images of how useless any attempt by Bassanio to save his life will be

  • What are they? Antonio says "You may question with the wolf Why he hath made the ewe bleat for lamb; You may as well forbid the mountain pines To wag their high tops and to make no noise When they are fretten with the gusts of heaven; You may as well do any thing most hard As seek to soften that-than which what's harder?-"

  • What do they tell us about one of Shakespeare's interests  I think that he likes nature.

  • Each example is an extreme and impossible, what influence
does this have on how you expect the rest of the scene to develop.
think that this was a good part Antonio said because it shows a picture in your head of what he said and
I think that's what Shakespeare wanted.

  • Shylock uses vivid comparisons when he wants to make a point. What example does he use to illustrate the fact that the pound of flesh is his:"tis mine and I will have it"  Shylock uses the really bad living conditions to compare what he was saying.

  • It is much longer comparison than the three used by Antonio
but do you think it is more striking/effective/convincing?
I think it is because he is relating to Antonio more.
