Today in class we are starting to make a 30 seconds long film. We started planning today and decided what camera angles we will use. Alex gets distracted on is computer when the teacher is trying to explain something on the TV. Class is really really long and boring. From the teachers point of view she looks at Alex the teacher comes towards Alex stands behind me when Alex don't notice Alex turn around and Alex looks at the teacher frighteningly the teacher gets mad at me Alex then get sent to referral the reasoning behind Alex getting sent is because Alex got distracted and was not on what he should have been on Alex walks slowly to the referral room.

Coraline

1. Describe at least one way that a character or individual changed in the text

The other mother
-  At the beginning - she was kind, loving, she is two faced, perfect model for a mum, a bit strange, buttons for eyes (symbols)

- At the end - crazy,strange,violent, malicious,sinister, looks like a witch. no longer looks like a human or a mother
-Physical change that shows the real evil mother - was always evil, but we didn't see it
- Legs - extend/grows more/metal, head - pointy, gets skinnier, loses all fat then skin
- Costume - nice and form fitting  to rags, warm clothes, more dark colours - black/red/white, more beetle like, less human like.
- Colour/lighting - at the start  - artificial, warm,orange like - makes us feel welcome/safe
- But the end - artificial, cold, dark with neon green and purple light - feel dangerous/horror

2. Explain how this change was important to the text as whole

- Shows the theme - 'looks can be deceiving'
- Made the story scarier to see her change over time, more intense, draw the viewer in.

Thesis statement - My argument
In Henry Selicks 'film Coraline', a character whose change was important to the story was the other mother. We first encounter her as a kind perfect mother, but by the end we see her true nature as an evil soul stealing demon. this shows us the theme of looks can be deceiving, this essay will discuss ho colour and lighting, physical changes and costumes are effectively used to show the change in the other mother.

The other mother, a character in Henry Selicks film 'coraline, changes from a nice mother to a soul stealing demon spider.

'Looks can be deceiving' is and important theme in henry selicks film 'coraline. it is best shown through the changes of the character, ' the other mother'.

Workshop 3: How is colour used to create the two worlds

A. Real world study
colour dark,grey ,blue,green
lighting: natural light
feelings = sad,lonely,depressed,miserable,
dusty,old,dirty,
director = gives us a sense about how Coraline feels-board,sad
= shows that the dad is overworked

B. The other world study
colours = orange,artificial orange,red
lighting = warm, artificial light
feelings = happy,bright,exciting,relaxed,clean,tidy
director =  makes is look like the kind of place Coraline would like to live in
= shows the other father is active and awake. This father has time to talk to Coraline.

Statement = Example = Explain audience feels = Explain director did to show = Explain how it works with something else = your link -question -theme - another moment in the story

colour is important in creating the two worlds and showing the theme 'looks can be deceiving'! This has shown when comparing the studys in the real and other worlds.The real world study is dull,dowdy and cold with a grey and blue colour palette. This makes the audience feel like the space is miserable and unpleasant to be in. The director did this to show that Coraline is upset that her father is to busy to spend time with her. Juxtaposed to this is the study in the other world. Artificial oranges  and reds makes the other study feel warm, welcoming and enticing. Selick does this to show the audience that this the kind of world Coraline would like to live in. colour is used to make the other world feel like a safe place but it is actually a trap to lure in Coraline and steal her soul.

theme =
big ideas = looks can be deceiving = courage and bravery
Juxtaposed = the complete opposites

WorkShop 2: How does "lighting" enhance the story

1. real world kitchen =
dark,duel,cloudy,raining/grew,dowdy
lighting coming from outside
makes house look old/mouldy/cold,
would smell musty
natural
feelings =
sad,bored,lonely,cold
makes a clear contrast between the two worlds
not everything in the real world is perfect
show us (coraline isn't happy there)

cold light = bright white,bright blue,makes the room feel cold
Warm light =
often yellow/orange makes the room feel warm & warming
artificial lights,over the table,

2. other world's kitchen = bright.warm light,welcoming,
feelings =
feels warm,welcoming,happy,safe
make the world seem perfect it is where coraline wants to be.
the other world is the perfect web/trap to catch (coraline)

atmosphere/mood = the way you feel in the situation

when comparing the real world and other world kitchens,lighting is used effectively to enhance the story. The real world kitchen uses a natural cold light coming through the window to make the space feel cold.bored and unhappy.The director did this to show the audience that Coraline isn't happy there. in comparison, the other worlds kitchen has an artificial warm orange light that creates a welcoming,happy and safe atmosphere. Selick used this technique to show that Coraline is happy in this perfect world it is the perfect trap to catch Coraline. this can be compered to later in the film when Coraline realised the other mother is evil. From this point the lighting in the other world becomes duller like the real world to show Coraline doesn't want to stay there anymore.

First thing = brainstorm both pictures - lighting
Second thing = how we felt
Third thing = why did the director do it
Fourth thing = write a paragraph

Brainstorm =
door to the other world = lighting is very dark looks mouldy and cold
